“My Gentle Dentist Arana Hills have Special Training in Removing Wisdom Teeth under Local Anaesthesia and are Extremely Competent and Quick”

Wisdom Tooth Surgery Overview

The 3rd set of molars, which usually occurs between 17 and 25, are removed during Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery.

Suppose a Wisdom Tooth does not have room (impacted wisdom tooth), resulting in pain, infection or other dental problems. In that case, you will likely need to have it taken out.

Dentists and Oral Surgeons may suggest Wisdom Tooth Extraction to prevent future problems, even if the affected teeth do not cause problems at the moment.

The majority of wisdom teeth can be extracted safely under Local Anaesthesia.

All About Wisdom Teeth

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the 3rd and final pair of molars that most people develop between the ages of 17 and 25. These teeth can sometimes be an essential asset to the mouth if they are healthy and properly aligned. Still, they are more often misaligned and need to be removed.

Note: Some people may never develop wisdom teeth.

What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Because the human mouth cannot accommodate 32 teeth, Wisdom Teeth can cause crowding, infections, and swelling.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth are those that do not have adequate room to develop correctly. They don’t quite make it to the mouth. As a result, they may grow in the wrong direction, emerging sideways, at an incorrect angle, or only half-developed.

What are the problems with Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

An Impacted Wisdom Tooth can cause the following problems:

Grow at an angle toward the next tooth (second molar).

-Grow at an angle toward the back of the mouth.

-Grow at a right angle to the other teeth, as if the Wisdom Tooth is “lying down” within the jawbone.

-Grow straight up or down like other teeth but stay trapped within the jawbone.

When will I need to get an Impacted Wisdom Tooth Removed?

You will likely need your Impacted Wisdom Tooth removed if it results in problems such as:

-Pain

-Trapping food and debris behind the Wisdom Tooth.

-Infection or Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease).

-Tooth Decay in a partially erupted Wisdom Tooth.

-Damage to a nearby tooth or surrounding bone.

-Development of a fluid-filled sac (Cyst) around the Wisdom Tooth.

-Complications with Orthodontic Treatments to straighten over teeth.

Are there any alternatives to removing a Wisdom Tooth?

A Coronectomy is a dental operation used as an alternative to Wisdom Teeth Extraction in certain conditions.

When a Dentist believes there is more danger to the inferior dental nerve, they may perform a Coronectomy.

If the Wisdom Tooth or root is infected, a Coronectomy is not suggested.

A Dentist or Oral Surgeon can do both treatments.

Depending on criteria like your age and the likelihood of nerve injury, your Dentist will likely recommend one operation over the other.

Wisdom Tooth Surgery Aftercare

You’ll need to take care of yourself and rest for a period after Wisdom Teeth Extraction.

If you’ve had any sedation or general anaesthetic, we strongly advise you not to drive for the next 24 hours or so and to hire someone to help you. Your Dentist will provide you with specific instructions before doing the surgery.

Antibiotics and pain relievers may be prescribed for up to a week following surgery. Your Dentist will advise and prescribe medicines that are most appropriate for your circumstances.

After surgery, there will be some bleeding, which will go away in four to five days. To address this, apply ice immediately after surgery. Your Dentist will advise of any possible complications, risks, or side effects of wisdom teeth removal.

Foods to Eat and Foods to Avoid:

Staying hydrated and eating well is vital for recovery, though you may not have an excellent appetite after surgery.

Ask your Dentist for specific instructions on what you can eat in the first few days of recovery.

Focus on food that will be easy to eat without much chewing and food that will not disrupt your blood clot or stitches.

Start with very Soft Foods at first, such as:

What should you avoid eating?

  • Hot Food
  • Nuts or seeds that could get stuck in the hole where your wisdom teeth used to be.
  • Drinking from a straw or slurping too vigorously from a spoon, which can dislodge your blood clot or ruin stitches.

If you have any concerns about your treatment, please ask your friendly Dentist at My Gentle Dentist.
